The Department of Sociology is 31 years old in Lady Brabourne College. It was established in 1988 with teaching at Pass Course Level. Teaching at undergraduate level started in the year 1994 with only 20 students. It was first among the Government Colleges in West Bengal to start Sociology at the undergraduate level. From its inception the demand for the subject is increasing day by day among the students. At present the number of seats in admission to the first year in Sociology is 50.

The former teachers who served this department with their expertise are Prof. Basabi Sur, Professor, Department of Sociology, University of Calcutta; Dr. Madhumita Sen, Associate Professor, Late Smt. Priyasmita Dutta, Lecturer, Smt. Aditi Basu, Assistant Professor, Maulana Azad College and Dr. Sumita Saha, Associate Professor, Presidency University.
