Sanskrit Department

About

The Department started its journey with both pass and Honours courses since 1941. Late Latika Roy was the first teacher and Late Dr. Santa Sen was the first Head of the Department. After her, Gradually Dr.Sivani Dasgupta, Smt. Gouri Dharmapal, Dr. Shanti Chakborty , Dr. Trishna Chatterjee Dr.Sutapa Ray rendered their service as Heads. At present the Department has four full time faculty members, viz.Dr.Sutapa Ray, Dr.Samapti Garai, Dr. Bidisha Misra, Smt. Susmita Goswami. The Department has a remarkable collection of books of different facets of Sanskrit language and literature. The Department has also got a seminar library, which is extensively used by the students. The Department has recorded excellent results since of its existence. It has distinguished record of four Eshan Scholars, many first classes and distinction holders. The Department of Sanskrit is proud to have one of the best professors as its faculty like Smt.Gouri Dharmapal, the eminent scholar and renowned teacher. She represented a new perspective to learn the Vedic Literature. She is the author of many reputed books. She got many prestigious prizes for her remarkable contribution in the field of literatures especially for children.

The students of this Department bagged PC Chandra Gold Medal twice awarded by PC Chandra Group for their all-round performance both in academics and extracurricular activities. Many of our students are now successfully engaged in academic field (Both in Govt.& Non Govt.) and private sectors. The students of this Department traditionally play a great role in the extracurricular activities of the college. The Cultural function of the Reunion Day and the celebration of the foundation day of the college usually begin with the 'Mangalacarana' which is performed by the students of this department. The students also staged Sanskrit Dramas like Kumarsambhava, Mrcchakatika, Meghaduta etc. The Department is proud to mention that the Muslim Girls are gradually showing interest to take up Sanskrit as their Honours subject. The Faculty members are happy to get the opportunity to impart the lesson of Sanskrit to them and encourage them to get success in life. Students take active part in the seminars organised by the Department. A seminar was organised on 'A Comparative study of Aesthetics in Sanskrit, Hindi and Persian Literature' sponsored by UGC with collaboration of the departments of Sanskrit Hindi and Persian. Departmental students are regularly involved in the NSS programme with some special actives.
