Department of Microbiology was established in the year 2002 with the undergraduate Hons Course during the tenure of Prof. Gopa Dutta Bhowmik, the then Principal of Lady Brabourne College. Dr. Aditi Nag Chaudhuri was the founder head of this department under whose able guidance the department flourished to its full grandeur. On 2nd September, 2002, 15 students got admission to Microbiology Honours Curriculum and Prof. Dutta Bhowmik ceremonially opened the door for the students.

The inaugural programme of the department was held under the sponsorship of UGC on 'Impact of Research on Microbial World on the Economy of the Developing Countries'. Prof. Satyasadhan Chakraborty, the then Minister in Charge, Higher Education, inaugurated the department. Prof. Pijush Ganguly, Director of Public Inatruction and a number of distinguished scientists delivered valuable lectures which were later published by the department.

The Postgraduate Course in Microbiology was introduced in 2005 with 15 students which was increased to 25 in 2017. Prof. Dhrubajyoti Chattopadhyay, then Pro Vice Chancellor (Academics), University of Calcutta, was invited to deliver the inaugural speech of the first orientation programme for the PG.students.

The department has flourished with great accolade and grandeur acquiring many sophisticated instruments and equipments by obtaining grants from DST- FIST and CPE in 2010 and DBT STAR in 2012. Our Department has been recommended as Star department by CPE. The Post graduate Deparrtment has received a grant from West Bengal DBT BOOST II, under Department of Higher Education, Science & Technology & Biotechnology, Govt. of West Bengal, in 2015. The department ensures that students are enlightened by quality teaching by renowned teachers and scientists of both national and international repute. Eminent scholars like Prof. Dhrubajyoti Chattopadhyay, Vice-Chancellor, Amity University; Prof. Basab Chaudhuri, Vice-Chancellor, West Bengal State University; Prof. Tapas Kundu, Director, CSIR-CDRI; Prof. Gourisankar Ghosh, Professor of Chemistry and Biochemistry, University of California, San Diego, USA, were some of our special guest faculties in the Post Graduate course. The PG students have been also taught by experienced teachers and renowned scientists like Dr. Chanchal Dasgupta, Retired Professor, Department of Biophysics and Molecular Biology, University of Calcutta, Dr. Subrata Majumdar, Retired Scientist, Bose Institute, Kolkata, Dr. Sandip Narayan Sinha, Ex Director, Indian Institute of Jute Technology, Kolkata, to name a few. A One Year Post Graduate Diploma Course in 'Food & Drug Safety' was further introduced by the department, which was approved by the University of Calcutta and sponsored by University Grants Commission in 2011 with 10 students. This PG Diploma Course has been taught by eminent guest teachers like Dr. Jagabandhu Chakraborty, Ex Director of Central Food Laboratory, Kolkata, Dr. Arun Guha, Scientist, Indian Association for the cultivation of Science, Kolkata, Dr. Tarasankar Bandopadhyay, Advisor to the Department of Biotechnology, Govt. of West Bengal, Dr. Sriparna Dutta, Professor, Department of Appiled Chemistry, University of Calcutta to name a few. A Certificate Giving Ceremony was held in 2014 when the PG diploma students were distributed their certificates by Prof. Suranjan Das,the then Vice Chancellor, University of Calcutta.
