This Department was established on 1950 -'51 with Botany as a subject in I.Sc classes with affiliation from Calcutta University under the guidance of Dr.NirodSen (HOD), Dr.Madhuri Roy (Lecturer) and Mrs.NilimaSinha (nee - Roy, Demonstrator). In 1960-61, Pre-University courses for science students were introduced by Calcutta University. In 1960 Calcutta University also offered affiliation to start Botany Honours and pass courses for under graduate courses. Dr. Shanti Batra, Dr.Madhuri Roy, Dr.Dipti Mukherjee, Dr.ChitraPurakayastha rendered their service as Head of this Department. At present the department has six full time and three part time sincere faculty members for whom academic interests of the students are of utmost importance and they are dedicated to create an all round progress and over all personality development of students.

The department has a medicinal garden to study and to carry out researches. Preservation of valuable specimen in museum and a rare collection of herbarium specimens are praiseworthy. The department also has a remarkable collection of books of different authors in seminar library which is extensively used by the students. The department has three well equipped laboratories for students and a tissue culture research laboratory with sophisticated instruments for purpose of detailed research in various field of botany.

Department has remarkable result, with high percentage of first classes and university rank holders.

The students of this department participate in intra-college workshops and seminars under the supervision of teachers of the department. For continuous encouragement faculty members arrange inter departmental seminars to provide the opportunity to students for delivering lectures and presentations of their curriculum. The students of this department regularly do in house projects in different aspects of the subject and present their findings in the form of charts and posters under the guidance of teachers.

They play a great role in extracurricular activities like dance, song, extempore and drama. They also compete in intra-college and Inter- college song, dance and quiz competitions. Some of them are very promising and an active actor of theaters. They also participate in different social activities under the NSS scheme. For basic education of children from BPL families, college is conducting a night school in which our students actively participate as teachers and administrators. For the awareness of basic health and hygiene various talks and seminars have been organized by NSS teacher student members in the college premises. Under the guidance of teachers students organized a medical health camp with the facility of health check up of the women and children of adjoining slum areas. The active participation and enthusiasm of our students were really praiseworthy.

Every year this department organizes an excursion with a point of view of giving exposure to the students about the biodiversity and ecological study of different flora under the supervision of teachers of the department.

The teachers of the Botany department impart to the students the knowledge they have gained through their dedication to the subject for years. Their teaching not only helps the students to acquire degrees but to kindle the fire of knowledge in the young inquisitive minds. The very competent faculties of this department are always trying to be with the average merit students. With their support and encouragement they come out with a good knowledge of that subject with a successful University result.
